My true first computer
Leave it to your oldest friend to point out a few inaccuracies in your memory. When I compared my new iBook to my "first" computer, I used my first PC, which was the first computer I bought. In truth the first computer I ever owned was a Commodore 64. Now back then computers didn't even have hard drives. I used a tape drive to load programs from an audio cassette every time I want to use it. Eventually I upgrade to a 4.25" floppy drive that probably weighed 3 times what my laptop weighs! And the stats on the Commodore 64? Well, it had 64K of RAM and a processor cranking at a whole 1 MHz. Wow! read more »
Movie Library
I've recently purchased DVDpedia to help manage my growing DVD collection and make it available for friends and family to borrow my movies. The software is great because I can use my digital video camera to scan the UPC bar code and it will search several internet databases, like Amazon and IMDB for the information, which saves me a lot of typing!
The movies can be viewed by categories in the menu on the right or you can search the site for a movie.
If you'd like to borrow a movie let me know.
Newsletter Testing
I have a new plugin that send notification emails to everyone who has subscribed to my site. The WordPress Widget doesn't send the email. This will test if Ecto can.
Shopping Cart Testing
I'm testing a shopping cart that works with WordPress and PayPal. It's very simple and lacks features like multiple images or thumbnails for products, but it functional and easy for me to manage.
The code looks like I might be able to modify it to add some more functionality and change the HTML layout.
New Site Template
I've complete a new template for the site in anticipation of replacing my current CMS for A Dave Creation. WordPress is very easy to manage, which should help in keeping content on the site fresh, and it produces valid code.
I still need to figure out a gallery solution, but I should be able to make the switch this week.
About Me
I've been a professional graphic designer for 12 years (check out my Maine design company site), I entered the field at a time of change; hand paste up had given way to computers. My ease with computers served me well and have been a part of my life before most. The first computer I every touched was a old Radio Shack machine with a tiny built-in monochrome monitor. It didn't do all that much, but for start I was hooked. read more »
Email a no go
We'll email submission didn't work. I'm sure it's just a setting that it's not correct. Just have to find it.
I'm also having trouble with updating an existing post. It seems to remove the post from the site.
I installed a couple of plugins and templates to play with. I like the template I'm using, but I really need to make me own. The Gallery plugin is giving me a bit of a problem, but I'm hoping the link plugin that turns keywords in to links will work with Ecto. Here's a test. Visit my site Artopa. Is the name a link?
Its the weekend and I have a long list of things I need to do, but I need to stop sitting in front of the computer for the night and pick this back up in the morning.
Here I go again.
You'd think that I had enough trouble managing a personal site powered by Mambo and a business site powered by Typo3 without adding a third powered by WordPress. The thing is that while I like the power and flexibility I get with Mambo and Typo3 in making sites, I don't like the difficulty in producing standards-based code or, on a more fundamental level, just entering copy through a browser. Even with a fast connection, WYSIWYG editor are just no where near as go as an editor on the client.
So, I come to WordPress again. Back when I was tearing in to Mambo, I set up a little site for a friend. She just wanted a simply site and I thought WordPress would be a good choice for her. I liked the simplicity of the it. It's about blogging and that's about it.
Now that I've been managing two site for a year, the difficulty of working with content live on a server have lead me to Ecto. Ecto is a piece of software that I use on my Mac to manage copy on a blog. WordPress in my case. I've just finished installing everything and this is my very first entry. Let the testing begin. I do like testing new toys.
